Modern Group and CEO Paul Farrell Profiled in Philadelphia Inquirer

Modern Group's President and CEO Paul Farrell was featured in an article published in the July 21st edition of the Philadelphia Inquirer. This interview covered a range of topics included a discussion of our diverse product lines offered to our customers, the structure of our company as an ESOP and what that means for long term success, and some hobbies Paul enjoys.

Accompanying articles are also being published on Philly.com. The first explored the concept of an ESOP, as Modern is a 100% employee owned company. This structure brings with it some challenges a traditional organization does not need to face, such as wide disclosures of financial performance to all employees, but holds tremendous strengths for customers and owners alike.
"Quite honestly when you call Modern and you speak to the receptionist or to me or to the technician, those people are owners of this business and they have a vested interest in making sure you are happy,"-Paul Farrell

Modern Announces Owners of the Quarter for Spring 2014

Good Morning,

Today we honor the dedication and drive that shapes all of us as ESOP owners by recognizing those who are our vanguards.

We are proud to honor our Owners of the Quarter for Spring 2014.

Paul Farrell, President and CEO

Modern Group

John Barilar
John's dedication to his job and those he serves knows no bounds of distance or time of day. I doubt many people would be able to produce an instance when John was not available to help solve their problems.
A nominator of his said it like this:
"John goes above, over and around the call of duty...no matter the day or time or what the problem is, he is there to help and keep you up and working. "
Thanks John!

Scott Overbay

Scott's nomination came in the form of a signed letter from a customer to the Bristol branch. In its paragraphs are found the essence of an ESOP Owner:

"One of the things that makes Mr. Overbay a great asset is his attention to detail and proficiency at multi-tasking. I have had techs before that were good at one or a few aspects of this job but failed at other important tasks. Scott has shown the ability not only to turn wrenches and get vehicles running and working, but to keep the paperwork in order and maintain lines of communication...He always has an attitude of "How does we solve this problem?" instead of "We have a problem."

The big things matter, but what often makes the difference are the little things. Communication, paper work, proactive thinking and action. These may seem trivial in comparison to the job requirement of "fix my forklift". Scott is proof that your craft is mastered with hundreds of small details, not one big result.

Ryan Smith

Wrangling our Equipment & Supply service operation in Edison can be a tall order. Ryan has the ability to make it all look easy.
Never get rid of that beard!

Rosalie Storti

"Rosalie is an extremely dedicated hard working Modern owner. She always goes over and above."

Rosalie is an embodiment of that ethos. Her dedication to the customer is unparalleled, more than a match to the conditions mother nature throws their way. One only has to look to the recent ice storm to see that it did not matter that a titanic number of calls had to be fielded, each one was a single customer who would be given every degree of attention and expertise Rosalie had to offer.

"Finding the right solution for the job is what our company does, this isn't just true for the equipment we deliver to our customers but the investments we make to serve our customers."

Modern Keeps Customers Rolling Through Ice and Snow

At our foundation Modern is built for challenge, we seek it out and we conquer it. We do this because we have a purpose, to serve those who look to us. There is not a day that goes by where this is not true, demonstrated 300 fold by everyone who turns a wrench, answers a phone, or hits a key. But there are times which stand apart and brings it all into sharp focus.

We are built for times like this.

February's ice storm cut a swath of disruption all too familiar to this region. Like Hurricane Sandy before it, the staggering task at hand was met with stern resolve and brilliant execution by the men and women of Modern.

Modern Power Systems was first on the front line. Coordinating service, moving inventory, sorting through requests for help coming from every direction and source. Bristol’s reorganized pole barn proved invaluable as Generac stock was placed right next Power System’s building. Customers could drive up, load up, and leave…by any means necessary:

There are countless stories of folks directly served out of Bristol, but one we’d like to draw special attention to occurred late in the day Wednesday. A man by the name of Joe Behrle of Behrle Construction pulled up in his truck and came into the Power Systems office. He had driven all the way from Media, PA where his business is located. He’d been searching for a backup generator for his company, spoke to Rosalie that afternoon, and was now able to get his hands on a Generac portable unit. The team pulled it down in the barn for him, but to his concern it required assembly before he could start it.

Right then and there, without being asked, Roy Hoover and Cody Matthews split open the box and began putting it together right there in the barn. Everything was checked out, primed, and place in the back of Joe’s truck, ready to roll. He was overwhelmed with the level of service and professionalism Modern brought to his side.

With all the phones ringing off the hook, with all the customers preparing to drop far more money on our services than he had just done, we took the time to make sure he was taken care of without a moment’s hesitation.

After the surge in Power Systems comes another, chippers and grinders. Modern’s Equipment & Supply sales, service, and parts teams are working around the clock to make sure our customers are able to take care of their customers:

Look no further than what happened this afternoon in Bristol. Longtime customer Bill Johnston is the owner of William Johnston & Company in Haverford, PA. The company has been in business since 1929, and this week is shaping up to be one of the busiest in its history. He needed reinforcements to tackle the army of downed trees throughout Delaware County, so he came to the people he trusted: Ron Dortone Sr. and Jr.

It took a 4x4 truck, a track loader, and a lot of muscle to extricate the Bandit 250xp from winter’s grasp, but the Dortones understood that the quicker Bill got that Bandit hitched, the quicker Bill’s customers would be taken care of. As soon as the chipper was on the main drive Bill pulled up his pickup, signed the papers, and drove off to his jobsite.

We are made for times like this because we know our drive, purpose, and reputation are born in fire. When our customers need us most, we keep them rolling.
